Conservation is the repair and protection of Nature. It allows me to take care of the environment around me and focuses on the health & welfare of the plants, the animals, the environment and of Us.
Countless private & public agencies provide physical & financial support to landowners & land managers.
We began our mission by contacting our local USDA office and with the help of our local Forestry Department, established a comprehensive Forest Management Plan. A biologist from FWC, Florida's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commision, surveyed the preserve and let us know exactly what this forest needed.
Then, with assistance from the USDA's Natural Resource Conservation Service, we were introduced to a number of different assistance programs. The Environmental Quality Incentives Program or EQIP fit our needs best. All of this assistance was provided at no cost to us.
Landowners & Land Managers are responsible for getting the dirty work done. Programs will support conservation financially. But you, as the landowner or land manger, must be willing to do the work.
At this point in my journey, I had the honor of participating in the Natural Resource Managment Internship with a private organization ACT, the Alachua Conservation Trust. During this comprehensive internship, I was taught land management activities including invasive species management, preserve management, trail work, prescribed burning, forest thinning, surveying/monitoring, grant writing, & land easements. I was also able to build a network of natural resource professionals to asset in my future efforts. All of this education & assistance was provided at no cost to me.
Nothings for free, right. There are costs associated with conservation. But amazingly, those programs that I told you about earlier, reimburse a large percentage of the money invested by Landowners & land managers.
Like I said before, if you're willing to do the work, they are willing to reimburse you for your time and efforts.
See our conservation plan & actual cost below.
If you know how to apply for grants (I was taught by ACT), you can get funding up front for your conservation & outreach efforts. There are so many grants available for conservation. There are a lot of organizations who want to see our lands protected, they want to help, you just have to do a little searching to find the grants that meet your objectives.
LOL, who doesn't it benefit would be the shorter list to write. The best way I can put it is that the future of our planet, and everything living on it benefits from conservation. We are making a promise to our planet, to Nature itself, to protect it and everything that relies on it. I will benefit, you will benefit, our children and grandchildren will benefit from conservation. All the plants and animals, our air, our waters, and the land we live on will benefit from conservation.
As our population continues to increase, our wildlands continue to decrease. The forest that I grew up in is gone now, ripped up & covered with urban development. Conservation, especially by landowners, can help save our wildlands for our future generations.
There are few things in this world that last forever. Popularity fades and trends die out, but Nature withstands the test of time. Our commitment to the preserve, and the work we do to protect it, will not fade after the initial projects are complete. Nor will it die out as the years go by. Every day we will do our part to ensure the wellbeing of this land. We will face all challenges head on and continue to do are best as land stewards. We have made a promise to Nature to apply the best management practices available for as long as we are able and legacy planning will ensure that these practices will continue for generations to come.
Chemical Control, Spot Application - Remove or treat herbaceous weeds including invasive, noxious and prohibited plants using chemical,
biological or mechanical methods, either alone or in combination to meet management objectives.
We are very lucky; we only have a small problem with invasive plants.
Pollinator Species - Establish and/or maintain permanent vegetation to reduce wind and water erosion, delivery of sediment to surface water, to reduce particulate matter and precursors, and reduce greenhouse gases.
Introducing more native plants for wildlife foraging.
Bare Soil, Eight Feet - Establish bare ground or vegetation to manage or control fire.
Firebreaks are our property perimeters and internal access roads. We won't be burning in our forest, it's too wet out there. Conservation Cover will eventually be applied to our interior forest access roads.
Chemical Application - Treat area to support establishment of woody plant species.
Preparing pastureland for reforestation of Long Leaf Pine Trees
Natural Regeneration - Establish, restore or enhance woody plant communities through natural regeneration methods.
Planting those Long Leaf Pines
Competition Control - Mechanical, Heavy Equipment - Treat species composition, stand structure or density by cutting or killing selected trees or understory vegetation to achieve desired forest conditions or obtain ecosystem services.
This is the bulk of our work, thinning an overgrow forest, the high cost reflects the use of heavy machinery.
This is a lot of money for us. We are not independently wealthy. But we will do what we can with the resources we have. Plus, the programs that we are utilizing, understand the financial burden. If we continue to do our part, the program deadlines can adjust to help us obtain the resources we need to continue.
I'm working on proposals for grants to help ease the financial burden.
NO!!!
You do not have to own the land that you want to conserve and protect. You just need permission and access granted by the Landowner to do the work. We do not own the Preserve yet; we have been leasing it for over a decade and fell madly in love with it. We are in the process of purchasing the land, until then there is so much good that we can do as Land Managers.
Plus, conservation can be done anywhere, even within city limits. If there is any Nature to be protected, you can help. Do you rent or lease a property where conservation can be applied?
If you would like a free evaluation on the possibility of conservation where you rent of lease, reach out to us. We would love to help you get started just as we did. Conservation will benefit your landlord as well, we'd love to explain how.
