Why Burn?

Fire, in the wild, is a natural process. Humans have built barriers that have stopped the natural regeneration that fire brings to nature. Many species here in Florida, plants & animals, rely on and have adaptations that help them survive and even prosper from fire.

Prescribe Fire allows us to control this natural process and prevent dangerous and destructive wildfires.

Prescribed Burning

Let's clear some of the smoke surrounding Prescribed Burning.

  • Fire is a Natural Occurrence in Nature
  • Fire Rejuvenates Native Plants.
  • Fire Improves Habitat for Native Wildlife.
  • Wildfires are Destructive, Flames and Smoke are Difficult to Safely Contain.
  • Prescribed Fire is Carefully Planned and Safely Conducted.

Prescribed Fire allows for the safe application of fire to an ecosystem.

  • Appropriate weather plays a crucial role in scheduling a Prescribed Burn
  • Site preparation prevents fire from escaping the prescribed area or from burning important structures.
  • Experienced burn crews come fully equipped with all necessary tools and safety gear to protect themselves, the forest, and surrounding communities.

Prescribed Burning benefits Wildlife.

  • Native wildlife was adapted to naturally occurring forest fires long before we arrived here.
  • Fires burned every year or two, rejuvenating vegetation, providing a more palatable food source and a more comfortable habitat for deer, tortious, quail, & turkey.
  • Burning year after year kept the fires intensity low & safe for native plants and animals.

Prescribed Burning works with Conservation, Forestry & Agriculture

  • Fire Assist in the Natural Regeneration of Native Plant Species.
  • Prescribed Fire can be Applied to Ecosystems in Need of Repair from Natural & Manmade Destruction.
  • Logging Companies utilize Prescribe Fire to create Safe Working Conditions and Sustainable Product Production.

Every crew member must have proper PPE, Personal Protection Equipment!

Prescribed Fire is a quick process. It's inexpensive & beneficial to the ecosystem.

A test fire begins a prescribed burn; a backing fire is set against the direction of the wind.

Smoke dispersion is a major consideration during and after the fire.

Wind directions must be right to ensure that smoke is blown away from cities & roadways.

Strip Heading is a fire technique used to control the intensity of a prescribed fire.
